A great Australian actress died from smoking in October 2001.

Australian Actress and heavy smoker, June Salter, dies ages 69.

June Salter, once described as the actress with the low cut voice, died in 2001 aged only 69. She was a heavy smoker and died from cancer of the oesophagus.

In that same year Australian actress, Nicole Kidman, did so much smoking in her widely publicised films that she has been tagged "the new Marlboro man".

Anti smoking forces in Australia are working together in pursuit of Federal Government legislation requiring film credits to state that no benefit was received from the tobacco industry.
